Celebrating 10 Years In Business in 2017

The last 10 years of my life have been filled with many exciting professional challenges. 2017 is not looking any different. In fact, my goals and action plans for 2017 tell me that it will be my most challenging since first establishing myself as an independent mobile DJ back in 2007.

Back then I had just returned from Japan after 3 years living and teaching English there. I had several years of prior experience working for mobile DJ companies and I knew, even before leaving for Japan that once I moved back to the US, (if I moved back to the US), that I was VERY likely going to be going into the business for myself.

I always wanted to keep it simple. No employees, less headaches, just me myself and I. Now, 10 years later I have to say that was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Your MC/DJ is your closest ally on your Wedding Day!

Every wedding service provider has their own priorities when it comes to your reception. The photographer has to get their pictures and the caterer has to serve the food and clear the tables. These and other duties are sometimes done without any consideration to how it may impact other aspects of the reception. Sure, you may need to take extra time for photos but to make your guests wait for more than an hour is a very bad idea. You need somebody there who is seeing the big picture and actively working to keep these different pieces from clashing in the timeline and potentially causing your guests to do the one thing that nobody wants; Leaving early.

Of all the vendors you may hire and work with on your big day, your MC/DJ is by far your best ally in the battle to make your reception successful. Your MC/DJ’s priorities are to keep the events flowing smoothly and to keep your guests happy while enabling all of your vendors to achieve their goals for the event. Being able to spontaneously see all of the pieces and then fitting them together is something that only an experienced MC/DJ who is tuned in to your goals can offer.

The right DJ will also be able to work with you in order to create more of a spotlight for you to shine, or to downplay that spotlight if being the center of attention is not your thing.

Choose your MC/DJ wisely as they are truly your closest ally on your wedding day.

Add Your Personal Touch To The Music Mix Of Your Reception

Hiring a professional DJ should mean that you are allowing them to choose which music to play and when. If you have chosen somebody with experience and knowledge then you should be trusting in them to draw on what they know to rock the party.

With that being said, it is also vital that you give your DJ a list of songs or artists that YOU and your family are likely to enjoy. This gives me a starting point to engineer a unique reception that is tailor made for you and your crowd. I have sections in my online planning form for 15 high priority songs (15 is about how many songs I can play in an hour) as well as space for as many other requests as you wish to make.

I pride myself on playing amazing music that is not typically heard at weddings but still fits within your plans and the dynamic of your crowd. This really draws people into the event making the energy skyrocket. Guest requests are a big part of what can make this possible.

Going from table to table during cocktail hour and dinner to introduce myself and ask for requests is key. This not only gives your guests a chance to get to know their DJ a little better but it also opens the door for great input. This is input that clues me in to what will make them rush to the dance floor.

Your guests will remember the fun they had at your reception long after every other factor is forgotten. Don't forget to add those music requests, they are what will make your reception not just fun and unique but also totally unforgettable.

Why I Like Working Weddings The Most

Weddings are known to be the most challenging and demanding of all the markets a DJ may work in. The age range of the audience is enormous, usually making for a much more musically and demographically diverse night than most club DJ’s would ever need to prepare for.

The environment also calls for a lot more diplomacy and patience as the DJ can be made to feel like they are working for not just their clients, guests, other vendors but also the venue. These different groups will naturally not always be in agreement. This is where a good MC/DJ will step in to keep all lines of communication open and find solutions to keep your big day on track.

I find weddings to be the most fun for all of these reasons. It is much more challenging and demanding than other types of gigs. I happen to find the challenge and added demands to be very exciting and fun.

So many things make working weddings very special to me, things like: Playing a different genre every third or fourth song, watching young and old alike dancing together and all of the “Thank Yous”” I receive from the newlywed’s family and friends.

These are just a few reasons why weddings are the best fit for me as a DJ and why they are my favorite.

Is A DJ Right For Your Event?

Every now and then I will get a call from a prospective client where a DJ may not be the best entertainment option. These are usually wedding receptions where there will be no alcohol served, take place early in the day and with a low guest count (40 or less).

Chances are that there will be lots of natural light at these events due to them taking place during the day which means lighting effects will not be noticed. With such a low number of guests in attendance this means that generally the energy level will be lower and more laid back with much less focus on the dancing. In this case the volume level tends to be on the low side which lends itself to the situation much better than louder music.

Having an MC/DJ adds a certain level of direction and formality to any event which would otherwise be lacking. I believe this direction and formality is what most people are really looking for when they hire entertainment. Hiring an experienced Wedding MC/DJ in a case like this is even more important than usual. Hiring a club or hobbyist DJ would be a big mistake and an unnecessary expense leading to possible disappointment on several levels.

So, even if a pure DJ is not a great option for your event, an MC/DJ Wedding professional can be a huge asset. An MC/DJ should be anticipating what needs to be done, helping to facilitate those things and then announcing them so nobody misses a single thing.

2016 will mean a much more active blog presence for JR Productions DJ. Original weekly articles covering many aspects of Special Event Planning from the perspective of a professional MC/DJ will give you a lot to think about when planning details or hiring vendors for your special event.

You may have a clear vision for your event but are you aware of the many pitfalls and common mistakes that could be likely to sabotage your best laid plans? Chances are that you have not done a great deal of event planning yourself, why not consider the professional opinion of somebody with a lot of experience?

After all, isn't experience what you are really paying for when you hire a professional? There is a lot more to any job than just having the neccessary equipment, tools and/or materials. Those things can be rented, borrowed or bought. True experience and proficiency only comes from doing something many times while striving to make constant improvements.

This blog will be an invitation to learn from my experience and in that process help you plan and execute better special events.
